Digital transformation is important to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as it can support emerging and innovative technologies for future research, sustainability, and profitability. In this research study, several factors that influence the success and failure of digital transformation were examined, with a specific focus on IT strategy, IT leadership, and leading practices for HEIs. While there is substantial research about digital transformation in other industries and global HEIs, more research is needed for HEIs in the United States. A qualitative metasynthesis research approach and reflexive thematic data analysis was used to identify six specific themes and four intersecting categories (clusters of themes) to build awareness of the barriers, challenges, and leading practices associated with digital transformation in HEIs. Triangulation was used to enhance the reliability and credibility of the manual and software-assisted coding methods. A conceptual model was developed as a tool to assist HEIs on their institution-wide Dx journey supported by an institution-wide shared Dx vision, holistic DX strategy, and transformative IT and Business Leadership.
