Technology use has significantly changed how sports fans engage with their favorite teams and athletic heroes (FTI Delta, n.d.). Emerging technologies are quickly reshaping sports fan engagement across the globe, moving them from passive viewing and enjoyment to personalized and highly interactive experiences (Deloitte, 2023). As technological advancements reshape the sports fans experience, they also open up new avenues for communication between sports teams and their fans and between sports organizations and their customer base. This dissertation explored the dynamic relationship between emerging technologies and fan engagement across diverse sports in an attempt to better understand this phenomenon. From broadcast innovations like instant replay to the advent of the internet, mobile devices, and artificial intelligence, technology has consistently reshaped how sports are played, consumed, and experienced (Capgemini, n.d.). Understanding these evolving dynamics is paramount for stakeholders across the sports ecosystem.

Traditionally, sports organizations have engaged fans primarily through conventional media such as television. However, the rise of social media platforms, mobile applications, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and data analytics has fundamentally altered how fans interact with sports content (Deloitte, 2023). For instance, mobile apps allow fans to access real-time statistics, engage in live polls, and receive personalized content, fostering a more interactive experience. Additionally, social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram enable direct communication between fans and teams, creating a sense of community and immediacy.

The integration of AR, VR and AI technologies offers immersive experiences, allowing fans to feel as though they are part of the action, whether through virtual stadium tours or interactive game simulations. This transformation presents both opportunities and challenges for sports organizations seeking to connect with fans and elevate their experiences (Deloitte, 2024).

For this research study, I investigated the evolving interplay between these emerging technologies and fan engagement, highlighting the implications of these changes on fan attitudes and behaviors. Technology-enhanced fan engagement in sports management is also significant in driving revenue streams and enhancing the financial viability of sports organizations. While established revenue streams like ticket sales, broadcasting, and sponsorships have historically played a crucial role, the quality of the fan experience is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of financial success (The Backpage, n.d.).

The ongoing trends in fan engagement, particularly through social media and mobile technologies, are pivotal in shaping the landscape of the sports industry worldwide. This study identified the various factors influencing fan engagement and technology, with a focus on understanding their interrelationships. By analyzing the impact of technology on fan behavior and engagement, the research provided new insights into the evolving dynamics of fan interactions across various sports.
